The Musicology Seminar Detmold/Paderborn
As a joint academic institution of Paderborn University and Detmold University of Music and as a teaching unit in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the Department of Musicology is dedicated to the study and research of music and music culture. The focus is on four university musicology degree programmes:
- Bachelor of Musicology (with an artistic study component at the HfM or with a focus on music theatre studies),
- Master of Musicology (with a cultural-historical, editorial or musical-artistic specialisation),
- Musicology as a subject area in the two-subject Bachelor's programme (Musicology in combination with another freely selectable subject from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities),
- Musicology as a subject area in the two-subject Master's programme (Musicology in combination with another freely selectable subject from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities).
In addition, musicology is taught in numerous other Paderborn and Detmold degree programmes such as Popular Music and Media, Music Teacher Training, Instrumental Pedagogy/Artistic Studies, Digital Humanities and Gender Studies.
The vast majority of single-subject degree programmes take place in Detmold. In the two-subject areas, around half of your courses are in Detmold and half in Paderborn. We actively support all subject combinations and find individual solutions in case of doubt so that you can alternate between Detmold days and Paderborn days in the most relaxed way possible. Please contact the Student Advisory Service at any time!
Research is also a formative factor for the Musicology Department. Long-term projects in the field of edition philology, digital musicology, musicological gender research and music theatre are particular focal points among the diverse research activities. Around forty academic staff and professors currently teach and conduct research at the Department of Musicology. Teaching at all levels, from bachelor's to doctoral programmes, benefits from the close proximity to current research practice and the direct link to artistic practice at the University of Music.
The main location in the Detmold FORUM Science-Library-Music guarantees a special working and study atmosphere, not least thanks to the excellently equipped new music library, which is also the institute library of the musicology department and in this function is jointly supervised by the college and university. Other locations are the Paderborn University campus and the HNI in Paderborn as well as the Kreativ Campus Detmold.
